Everything Polar Pilot said with one more. Put some Sta-Bil (fuel stabilizer) in the fuel. Today's gasolines have a very short shelf life so you should use it if you think the fuel will sit more than 30 days.

Springtime tip:
If you think your gas may have turned to "varnish" over the winter, put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank, mix it up (shake the bike back and forth), and let it sit for a day before you try to start it. Re-dissolves any deposits in the tank before they get to the carb. You can use the waiting time to charge the battery, clean the bike, check tire pressure, change oil, etc.
